Trying New Fruits – A Taste Adventure

Activity Date: April 17, 2025
Location: Gainesville, FL – fruits purchased from Sams Club and Trader Joe’s

This week, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try two fruits I’ve never tasted before: golden kiwi and dragon fruit (pitaya). I’ve always seen them in stores but never gave them a shot, until now.

Golden Kiwi

At first glance, golden kiwi looks similar to the regular green kiwi, but with a smooth, bronze skin and a slightly oblong shape. Once I sliced it open, I was surprised by how vibrant and juicy the inside was. The flesh had a beautiful golden-yellow hue with tiny black seeds in a sunburst pattern.

Taste & Texture:

  • Sweeter and less tart than green kiwi.

  • Smooth, soft flesh with a mild tropical flavor.

  • A subtle honey-like aftertaste.

My Thoughts:
I actually liked this way more than the classic green kiwi. It felt like a perfect balance of sweetness and freshness. I could totally see this becoming a go-to snack on hot days or sliced over yogurt.

Dragon Fruit (White-Fleshed Pitaya)

Dragon fruit is stunning. Its vibrant pink skin with green scales looks like something from a fantasy novel. Once I sliced it open, the contrast between the white flesh and black seeds was beautiful, almost like cookies and cream.

Taste & Texture:

  • Very mild and slightly sweet.

  • Similar in texture to kiwi but less juicy.

  • Refreshing but not very flavorful on its own.

My Thoughts:
I was expecting a bolder taste based on the fruit’s wild appearance, but it was pretty mellow. Still, I enjoyed the experience. It’s the kind of fruit I’d want to serve chilled or mix into smoothies for texture and color.

Overall Experience

Trying these new fruits gave me a greater appreciation for the diversity in nature’s flavors. It’s wild how something can look so exotic and taste so subtle—or vice versa. I’m glad I finally branched out and took the time to truly taste, not just eat.
